News from National Committees: France

ASSOCIATIONS, ORGANIZATIONS AND NETWORKS

In October 2000 an Association pour le développement de l'histoire des femmes et du genre -Mnémosyne was created in Paris; Françoise Thébaud is the current President. This association represents France in the IFRWH and has three main objectives: to promote the European, francophone and international dimension of women's and gender history; to encourage the institutionalization of this field of research; and to aid in the professional integration of scholars in the field. The Association published its first liaison Bulletin in 2002; it contained the papers delivered at its first conference, entitled "Profession historienne?" in October 2001. In June 2000 the Archives du féminisme was created; Christine Bard is the President. Its objectives include collecting and accepting private archives concerning feminist movements as well as creating inventories of such archives in order to enhance access to their sources. The association publishes a liaison bulletin, is working on a guide to French feminist sources, awards an annual prize for the best masters essay in the history of feminism and organizes an annual conference. In conjunction with the organization of the 3rd International conference in Francophone feminist studies in Toulouse in Septembre 2002, an electronic mailing list "etudesfeministes-L" was created to encourage interdisciplinary debate and exchange amonst feminist scholars. Another networking association emerged in 2001: the RING (le Réseau interuniversitaire et interdisciplinaire national sur le genre). It organized a conference entitled "Le genre comme catégorie d'analyse" at the University of Paris 7 on May 24-25 2002. For more information, contact Monique Dental (dental@ccr.jussieu.fr).

CONFERENCES AND SEMINARS

At the annual meeting of the Association pour le développement de l'histoire des femmes et du genre -Mnémosyne, in October 2002 a half-day conference was organized on the following theme: "Le Temps de l'action. Les dynamiques associatives dans le développement de l'histoire des femmes et du genre". Karen Offen presented a paper on the IFRWH, Sian Reynolds presented a paper on the Women's History Network in Great Britain and Michele di Giorgio described the "Societe Italiana della Storiche", a network of women historians in Italy. Finally a Spanish association for women's history sent a brief paper which described their activities since their creation in 1991. The papers will be published in French in Mnémosyne's second Bulletin in 2003.

The pluridisciplinary DEA at University Paris 7-Denis Diderot organizes a seminar with the following title in 2002-2003: "Hommes-femmes: identité et échanges". For more information, contact Gabrielle Houbre (houbre@ccr.jussieu.fr) or Régine Dhoquois (dhoquois@circp.jussieu.fr).

A monthly seminar on "Femmes et histoire. Lectures, écritures, appropriations et transmissions des savoirs historiques" is held at the Institut d'Histoire Moderne et Contemporaine in the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. A series of debates and conferences on the topic "Genre et Christianisme" will be held in Paris during this academic year. For more information, see the web page: http://fhe.asso.fr

A monthly seminar is held at the Maison Méditerannéen des Sciences de l'Homme in Aix-en-Provence on the subject: "Femmes, pouvoirs, créativités. Dynamismes et résistances". For more information contact Geneviève Dermenjian (genevieve.dermenjian@wanadoo.fr).

The GERS (Genre et rapports sociaux), which is a CNRS-Université de Paris VIII research unit, organizes a monthly seminar on Monday afternoons on issues relating to work, gender and social movements. A Franco-Bresilian conference entitled "Inégalités, actions collectives et nouvelles formes de régulation will take palce on November 18. For more information contact: gers@iresco.fr

The Association Mnémosyne will organize a conference on the subject "Les études sur les femmes et le genre en Allemagne" on October 4, 2003.
