The
Coordinating Council for Women in History continues to have an exciting and
productive year. A few changes have
occurred within the CCWH Board. Treasurer
Maureen Elgersman Lee has taken over for Marta VanLandingham, and Cheryl Johnson-Odim
will succeed Janet Afary as Co-President at the end of her term. The CCWH appreciated the hard work of both Afary
and VanLandingham.
The
CCWH participated in several professional meetings, including the annual meeting
of the Organization of American Historians (OAH) in Memphis. At
the fourth conference of the International Federation for Research in Womens
History (IFRWH) in Belfast, Ireland, CCWH Co-President Eileen Boris was a featured
speaker, and Assistant Newsletter Editor Christopher Corley delivered a talk
and covered the conference for the The CCWH Newsletter.
In
preparation for the 2005 Berkshire Conference on Women in History, the CCWH
introduced a new forum for scholars seeking participants for panels and roundtables. Proposals and panel descriptions will be posted
weekly on the CCWH website and printed in the Winter
edition of the Newsletter. Rebecca
Nedostup, CCWH Outreach Coordinator, organized this service.
The
editorial team of The CCWH Newsletter, consisting of Karol Weaver,
Chris Corley, and Adrianne Renberg, also has been hard at work.
The team invited CCWH members to submit innovative and intriguing syllabi,
and Professor Beth Salernos syllabus was chosen for the newsletters
Syllabus Spotlight. The
newsletter also presented Executive Director Jennifer Scanlons survey
of statements written by candidates for elective AHA offices. The Winter
issue will include the conclusion of a four-part series on parental leave
policies written by Assistant Professor Maureen Reed of Minnesota State University
Morehead. Finally, Professor Marla
Miller of the University of Massachusetts Amherst continues to keep members abreast of the
latest news in public history with her quarterly contributions.
The
end of the year will be busy with preparations for the annual AHA conference,
which will be held in Washington, D.C. As in years past,
CCWH will sponsor several panels, hold a board meeting, and host a luncheon.
The Council also will award several prizes including the CCWH/Ida B.
Wells Graduate Student Award and the CCWH/Berkshire Conference Graduate Student
Award.
