The Coordinating Council for Women in History was a vibrant presence at the
2004 American Historical Association meeting in Washington DC. In addition to
having its annual board meeting, the CCWH sponsored many interesting panels.
Outgoing co-president Janet Afary appeared with Elizabeth Thompson on a panel
titled, “Transnational Feminism and Sexual Politics.” Another impressive
CCWH-sponsored panel was “History and Activism.” Participants Jesse
Lemisch, Frances Berry, Lisa Duggin, Cynthia Harrison, and Thomas Sugrue contributed
to the roundtable, which hoped to bring to light the pleasures and pains of
combining scholarship and activism. Michael Heale, Landon Storrs, and Stacy
Baukman, likewise, presented fine papers on a panel, titled “Domestic
Insecurity: Revisiting Red Scare Politics in the United States, 1930s-60s.”
In keeping with its support of public history, CCWH sponsored a session on preserving
women's history sites in the United States.
A major highlight of the AHA meeting was the CCWH Luncheon, which featured a
thought-provoking presentation by Leila Rupp. The audience was intrigued and
inspired by Rupp's speech, Confessions of a `Journal Girl' or What Editing the
Journal of Women's History Tells Us About Where We Are Now.” In addition
to Rupp's talk, CCWH award winners were announced. Finally, co-president Eileen
Boris thanked Afary for her dedication and service to CCWH.
As in years past, the CCWH also sponsored a session on interviewing in the history
job market. In lieu of a reception, board members met with women and men interested
in learning more about the organization. Finally, CCWH hosted a drop-in room
for graduate students.
