Melbourne Conference Programme

International Federation for Research in Women's History Conference

‘Women and Human Rights, Social Justice and Citizenship: International Historical Perspectives’: 30 June - 2 July, 1998
Melbourne, Australia

CONFERENCE VENUE

The University of Melbourne is situated approximately one and a half kilometres north of the City of Melbourne. Queen’s College, where many participants will stay, is on the perimeter of the University, which is approximately 30 minutes by car from Melbourne airport. The cost of a taxi is about AUD$25.00. Alternatively there is a bus from the airport into the city, from which it is only a short taxi or tram ride to the University.

The average maximum temperature in late June and early July is 14 °C, with an overnight minimum of 7 °C. It will be really cold, especially for people coming from a northern summer. Think of London in a reasonably mild winter and pack accordingly. On the other hand, this a beautiful season in the tropical north of Australia for those who are able to take a holiday. A contact for those inquiring about touring is: Pauline Clarke, American Express Travel, PO Box 4192, University of Melbourne, Parkville VIC 3052, Australia, ph: +61 3 9347 7411, fax: +61 3 9347 6537.

Queen’s College provides breakfast as part of the accommodation fee. There are many cheap eating places on the University of Melbourne campus, and bistros and restaurants in the surrounding streets of Carlton. Melbourne is a city of three and a half million people, public transport is good, and there is a vigorous art, music and theatre life for conference participants to enjoy if they have the time.

It is clearly in all our interests if participants register as early as they can. Registrations may be cancelled in writing up until 17 June 1998, and refunds made minus the administration fee of AUD$50. After 17 June, no refunds can be made. The conference committee has engaged the services of a professional administrator, and we need to work within the systems she has established.

PROGRAMME

Below you will find an outline of the conference proceedings. Those who register by 30 April will receive a programme in the post, with the details of the times of the panels to which they established or to which they have been assigned. We also will place this programme on the conference homepage on the internet.

(http://www.arts.unimelb.edu.au/Dept/History/ifrwh.html). You will realise that the programme may be changed up until the date of the conference if people alter their plans.
