Message from the President of the Federation

Belfast Conference August 2003

Call for Papers
Plans for the conference are progressing well. Everyone on the Federation mailing list should have received several copies of the call for papers earlier in the year. We enclose in this newsletter another copy. Our first deadline of 1 June is now past but there is still plenty of time to meet our second deadline of October.

Sponsor A Delegate
The Federation has always been concerned that many women researchers can not afford the expense of travelling to conferences, particularly when they are overseas. Often those with least access to conference resources represent groups and interests that are under-represented at our conferences. Some National Committees have responded to this problem by establishing sponsorship schemes to contribute to the expenses of delegates attending their own national or regional conferences. We would like to suggest that a similar scheme be established to sponsor delegates to attend the Belfast conference so that we get the widest possible representation at the conference as possible.

I will, therefore, shortly write to all the National Committees to suggest that they consider providing some funds towards the travel expenses of a delegate from their own country or from another country. Obviously, not all National Committees are in a position to do this but some are and it would be wonderful if they could contribute to the work of the Federation in this way.

I look forward to receiving your proposals for papers and panels.

Best wishes from Belfast.
