DATABASE FOR MEDIEVAL WOMEN'S STUDIES

Announcing a new index free-of-charge on the Web:
The Medieval Feminist Index: Scholarship on Women, Gender, and Sexuality

http://www.haverford.edu/library/reference/mschaus/mfi/mfi.html

The Index covers journal articles, book reviews, and essays in collections from all academic disciplines. Because of the explosion of research in Women's Studies during the past two decades, scholars and students interested in women and gender during the Middle Ages find an ever-growing flood of publications. The Index aims to be a reliable guide to the scholarship, providing timely coverage, a wide range of publications indexed on a regular basis (300+ journals are now being checked), and a thorough description of each item (in addition to the usual author, title, subjects, and source, MFI includes century, geographic area, descriptions of illustrations and tables, and primary sources used). There are currently over 1800 records in the database for publications from 1994 through 1997 with 100+ records being added every other month.
Efforts have been made to make MFI as comprehensive as possible, with a special emphasis on foreign language materials. The Index currently includes records for publications in English, French, German, and Spanish. There are also plans to include Italian language publications. The same desire for inclusion has governed the chronological limits (450 C.E. to 1500 C.E.) and geographic boundaries (Europe, North Africa, and the Near East). The broad topic guidelines of women, sexuality, and gender mean that publications on masculinity and male homosexuality are also included.
Support for the project comes from the libraries of Haverford College and the University of Iowa. Indexers covering foreign languages are John Jeep (German, Miami University), Margaret Schaus (French, Haverford College), and Miriam Shadis (Spanish, Ohio University). Advisory board members, representing disciplines and geographic areas, recommend journals and essay collections for indexing.
Future plans for MFI call for a concentration on retrospective publications from 1993 through 1980. Individual articles in journals and essay collections that are not indexed automatically are being collected for selection and entry as time permits. The editor, indexers, and advisory board members welcome comments and questions from users. Authors who find their articles indexed in MFI are encouraged to send the editor brief abstracts for inclusion in the database records.

CEU PROGRAMME ON GENDER & CULTURE

The Program on Gender & Culture offers a set of comprehensive graduate-level courses in gender studies which exposes students, through quality coursework, individual tutorials and thesis writing, to a wide range of theories and issues and methodologies in gender & culture studies, with a particular focus on the post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe/former Soviet Union. The Program offers MA and M.Phil degrees as well as 3-10 month fellowships for visiting doctoral students.
****************Call for Grant proposals***********************
The CEU Program on Gender and Culture Gender Studies Small Grant Program (GSGP) 1998 is now accepting proposals for grants of up to 2,000 USD from regional groups, programs, and departments promoting women, women's studies, and gender studies in CEE/fSU Round I Application Deadline: JANUARY 15, 1998
Round II deadline: JUNE 15 1998
The GSGP has been established jointly by the Open Society Institute and the CEU Program on Gender and Culture to support gender initiatives in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and of the former Soviet Union. The program is based on the belief that small grants can often provide a vital and critical support for new and innovative programs. We are open to a wide variety of funding requests, but would like particularly to encourage groups which are just getting started and need seed money to raise more substantial funds elsewhere, or to establish basic infrastructures. Priority will be given to projects that are innovative, will result in increased   opportunities for others (e.g. greater access to materials and resources, or to participate in gender related activities) and will have a lasting impact.
Eligibility: Institutes, centers, programs and departments actively involved in teaching, research or policy activities that are of importance to gender issues are welcome to apply for grants up to $2,000 to be completed in up to 12 months. Only institutions which are located in the region are eligible to participate in GSGP. **Requests may include, but are not limited to: support for conferences, seminars, workshops, curriculum development, acquisition of materials (e.g. books, journals, CD roms) and services (e.g. translations of manuscripts when publishing agreements are . concluded, research/librarian services when documentation is provided that such a person would make a substantial contribution to increasing access to gender oriented resources).
**The funding may also be used for equipment like photocopy machines, fax machines, modems and computer upgrades.
**First time applicants are welcome, please take care and effort to document your request in great detail.
**Applications from individuals, requests for individual travel support or for research will not be considered.
**Applicants will not be eligible to receive more than one grant within a given yearly cycle (see below --Deadlines).

Application Procedures

Each organisation applying to the GSGP should submit the followingdocumentation in addition to the Applicant Information Form (follows at the end of this message). All applications must be written in English.
**Two page proposal describing the objectives of the GSGP project and expected outcomes.
**Detailed budget and narrative that clearly explains individual line items (no more than $2,000).
**A one page summary of the past activities of the group, program or department
